This programme, accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institution of Highways and Transportation) and the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, provides science and engineering graduates with the advanced conceptual understanding, detailed factual knowledge, and specialist technical skills appropriate for them to follow successful careers as technically aware environmental engineers in the water, waste and environmental industry. The programme is also an excellent introduction to environmental engineering if you want to follow a research-oriented career path.
For the MSc you complete compulsory modules (80 credits) and two out of three optional modules (20 credits), followed by a research project written up as a dissertation (80 credits). For the Diploma you take compulsory modules (80 credits) and undertake a shorter dissertation (40 credits). Compulsory modules include: water pollution assessment and sustainability; environmental engineering for developing countries; water supply engineering; wastewater engineering; solid waste management; integrated environmental engineering design project; research methods. Optional modules include: biological systems engineering; environmental risk management; contaminated land. Most taught modules are delivered as intensive one-week short courses, followed by a week of further reading or course work. The programme is therefore ideally suited for those working in industry to attend on a part-time basis. Each of our taught modules is also available as a self-contained CPD unit. Contact the School’s Professional Development Unit for details. Our staff and guest speakers contribute a wide range of environmental engineering expertise to the taught modules and to dissertation project supervision. Dissertation projects may be carried out in our own well-equipped laboratories, UK field sites, in industry or overseas (in recent years, our students have carried out projects in Spain, Turkey, Germany, France, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Kenya and Peru).
