This programme aims to develop the specialist skills and multidisciplinary knowledge needed for careers in environmental consultancy. An emphasis is placed on developing the business skills needed to define and evaluate environmental problems in a variety of contexts within a commercial framework, including example case studies taken from real situations.
For the MSc you take eight compulsory modules (80 credits), a further 20 credits of optional modules and complete a research project, often with an environment establishment, leading to a thesis (80 credits). For the Diploma you take the same 100 credits of taught modules, but complete a short 20-credit, library-based dissertation. Compulsory modules include: environment and habitat assessment field class; ecological survey techniques; sustainable development and environmental change; the environment business; environmental assessment – land and water resources; foundations of environmental law and policy; project planning; and quantitative techniques, experimental design and data analysis. Optional modules include: GIS and remote sensing; contaminated land; hydroecology; pesticides – uses and environmental properties; ecosystem management; trees – growth, management and environmental impacts; environmental systems modelling; environmental toxicology; tropical environments, ecology and land use.
