This programme aims to help you to achieve a critical conceptual understanding of practice, thought, evidence and theory relating to recent developments in language teaching and learning and to other areas of applied linguistics and communication studies, and to apply this professionally.
You take 200 credits of taught modules, including compulsory modules. These modules enable you to prepare a research proposal and carry it out. In addition, you take optional modules related to your area of interest. You then embark upon a research project addressing an issue of professional or academic concern or interest. You write up the research project in the form of a 50,000-word dissertation. The taught modules include: research methods; second language classroom interaction; bilingualism and bilingual education; TESOL theory and practice; TESOL for young learners; language and cross-cultural communication; computer-assisted language learning (CALL); introduction to academic practice; introduction to academic publishing; sociolinguistics; psycholinguistics and language acquisition; language assessment and teaching.
